WELCOME TO GRADES K-5 STEAM CLASSROOM PAGE!

Hi! My name is Ann Durst and I will be your child's STEAM Teacher.  All students grades k-5 will attend STEAM Class for 7-8 weeks every day Monday- Friday.  Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, & Math (STEAM) is a unique educational experience your child will love!  Everything we do in class will incorporate each discipline in STEAM.  We will start the year out learning how to work collaboratively to solve challenges and real-world problems. To learn more about why STEAM education is so important to your child's future, click on the learn more button to read an article about STEAM.

I am super excited about this year as we have improved on the STEAM curriculum.  Myself along with Ms. Ara, Executive Director of Curriculum, work all last school year to put together a STEAM curriculum to obtain the most educational benefit for our students.  The same awesome activities along with some cool new ones will be used in the classroom. Your children will love it!

ROBOTICS & PROGRAMMING

Robotics and programming is just one of the exciting areas students will gain hands on experience.  Working in teams, students will design, build, program, and test robots.  Students will engage in critical thinking skills while having fun at the same time.  Our school district has after school robotics programs available for grades 1-12 with Lego Club through high school FRC.  Click on the link below to learn all about our fantastic high school robotics team, FRC Team 4130 who were a World Champion Finalist in  2018!

WHAT WE'RE LEARNING

February/March

Farm Bureau Farm Lab is here!

Students will experience hands on science lessons in the awesome Farm Lab.  You will see it parked in the parking lot by the gym.  We are in need of volunteers to help out in the lab.  Please contact me if you are able to help out (February 22, 23, and 24)

Kindergarten students are applying what they have learned in previous units by researching, designing, and creating an animal habitat along with an animal of their choice (made out of clay).  Students must incorporate food, shelter, and water into thier habitats.

First Grade students have been learning about engineering design and life science.  Students are applying what they've learned about insects and spiders by designing and creating their own insect. Students name their insect, describe its habitat, and list adaptable qualities their insect displays. Students will also apply what they've learned about spiders and webs to design and create strong webs to capture various items.

Second Grade students have been learning about engineering design and physical science. Students are applying what they've learned about biomes and what makes things sink and float.  Students are challenged to design and create a boat out of recycled materials to rescue their minion figurine made out of recycled materials or other classroom items. Their boats must float and not sink for at least 3 minutes.

Third Grade students learned about engineering design and physical science.  They learned about force and its interactions on structures and stability.  Students are applying what they've learned by designing and creating houses that will sustain during extreme weather conditions (flooding and hurricanes).  Students will modify house structures as needed in order to withstand the flood (water poured onto their clay river beds) and hurricane winds (industrial fan used to blow directly on structures). Goal is to have dry paper houses (flood) and stable and whole houses after hurricane (fan at increasing levels of intensity).

Fourth Grade students learned about engineering design and physical science. Students will apply what they've learned about the planets by presenting information using various forms of media (diorama, poster, brochure, video) as realtors to persuade people to purchase a home on their selected planet due to the Earth being over crowded. Students will use information from research to present to the class.

Fifth Grade students learned about engineering design and physical science.  Students will apply what they've learned about biomes by designing and creating a biome specific animal or creating a tool to use for survival in the Amazon Rainforest using 3D software in TinkerCad.  Students will also design and create a shelter to survive in the Rainforest, map the best way to reach safety, and filter drinking water.
